The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has given the go-ahead for a budget totaling five hundred and eighteen million, two hundred and sixty thousand naira (N518,260,000) to facilitate the upcoming Local Government Area election in the State.

This funding was requested by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) through Governor Francis Nwifuru, aimed at ensuring a seamless electoral process scheduled for July 20th, 2024.

During a crucial plenary session at the Assembly Chambers in Nkaliki, Speaker Hon Moses Odanwa disclosed details from Governor Nwifuru’s letter, emphasizing the need for budget approval to cover essential expenses like clerk payments, Adhoc Staff compensation, and pre-election training.

Speaking passionately, Deputy Whip Hon Arinze Chukwu, representing Ishelu South State Constituency, Hon Onyebuchi Ogbadu from Ivo State Constituency, and Hon Esther Agwu of Ohaukwu North State Constituency advocated for swift approval to kickstart electoral preparations, highlighting the significance of electing new successors for incumbent Chairmen and Councillors whose term ends on September 1st, 2024.

“The election will give room for democratic principles that will engender orderliness and speedy development in the hinterlands,” stated Hon Odanwu, echoing the sentiment of the House members supporting EBSIEC’s proposal.

With unanimous approval secured after deliberations, Speaker Odanwa urged EBSIEC to ensure a free, fair, and credible election reflecting the electorate’s will. A memo has been directed to the State Governor, officially notifying him of the House’s approval of EBSIEC’s budget for the Area Council election.
